These services include, for instance: Legal Mapping, Legal and Ethical Requirements elicitation, Ethical Strategy elaboration, Ethical management and oversight, Legal Surveys, advice, practical guidance and support for embedding ethical and legal principles into tools, safeguards and procedures (Ethics and Privacy by design and by default approach), Ethics and Human Rights Impact Assessments.

Our main goal is to ensure the regulatory compliance, trustworthiness and fairness of technological developments (AI, Big Data and related technologies, e.g., cloud computing, internet of things, blockchain), whilst preserving EU values and ethical principles towards the ethically-aligned design, uptake and use of new technologies.

Our team includes lawyers and ethics experts with proven experience in the legal, regulatory and ethical aspects of AI and data-driven innovations (e.g., GDPR, Data Act, Data Governance Act, AI Act, Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, ALTAI Assessment List, etc.), supporting organisations in ensuring legal compliance and ethical soundness of their innovative solutions.

The Lab provides an interdisciplinary perspective on ethical and legal questions posed by scientific and technological innovation, combining ethical aspects of science and new technologies with EU legislation and policies. At the same time, the Lab promotes the alignment and engagement with EU initiatives and relevant networks and ecosystems, such as those on Trustworthy AI.

S&D has launched the Horizon Europe Legal and Ethics Network (HELEN, https://www.helen-hub.eu/), an innovative network designed to tackle the pressing legal compliance and ethical challenges posed by emerging technologies. HELEN’s vision promotes the human-centricity and value-driven approaches. HELEN fosters the dissemination of knowledge and collaboration among stakeholders, championing Responsible Research and Innovation guidelines. It is a vital platform for promoting a culture of responsibility in both research and business domains while encouraging synergy among related projects.
